Welcome to the Against the Grain website
Hello my name is Sue Swatridge. I have been making beautiful things from wood for twenty years. I am self taught and use many traditional methods and tools in my work, such as,cleaving, shaving and turning on a polelathe
I have been trading as 'Against the Grain' since 2000,my workshop is on a fell near Lindale and Grange over sands in the south lakes. I work for organisations such as the national trust aswell as private woodland owners. This means that most of the wood i use comes from trees that i fell myself so i am able to select just that very perfect curve for a seat back or an ideal small branch for spoon carving. Working with wood in this way also means that i know the wood is from a sustainable source.
I sell my work mostly at country fairs and craft shows where i am also usually demonstrating traditional country crafts such as pole lathe. I also take commissions and like nothing better than to make something for a particular corner in your garden,a table exactly the right height, length or shape,or a gift for that special occasion.
